Another
overseas Filipino worker (OFW) has brought pride to the country, she is Mica
Alcedo, a Filipina nurse. Alcedo has been working in Australia since 2004 and for this
year, she is one of the recipients of the Pride of Australia Awards.
According
to the Philippine Embassy in Australia,
the Filipina nurse was awarded the 2011 Pride of Australia Medal under the Fair
Go Category. The awarding ceremony was held at the Crocodylus
Park in Darwin, Northern Territory
on August 19.
This
recognition is given to Australian citizens/permanent residents who are born
overseas but have significantly contributions to their country through their community
involvement, hard work and willingness to embrace Australia as their new home.
Alcedo
clearly deserves the award because since 2004 when she first arrived in Australia, she has dedicated herself to working
with communities in the Northern
Territory.
She is
currently employed as a child and maternal health nurse in Tennant Creek. Her
previous work is as a school nurse in Alice Springs.
Mica
Alcedo also commits herself to helping disadvantaged youth. She is also the
founder of the “Ladies of Alice Springs,” a Filipino community in Australia.
Now on
its seventh year, the Pride of Australia Awards celebrates ordinary Australians
who do extraordinary things, with nominees reflecting the core value of giving
for the good of the Australian nation and people and their local communities.
This
Pride of Australia Awards has ten categories; Outstanding Bravery, Courage,
Heroism, Community Spirit, Child of Courage, Young Leader, Care and Compassion,
Inspiration, Environment and Fair Go.
